XAVIER FERNANDES - HONESTY

"Honesty," by Xavier Fernandes.

Artist's Note

Honesty… Truth… two words that could be very similar.

When you look at my photo of different pieces of wood, what do you see?

The concept for this piece is me and the people around me. Do you see me? Sometimes in a room full of people you may still be alone. The truth is that there are many people in your life but honestly how many of them care? Honestly, how many are there for you?

As a woodturner, I look at many different types of wood and try to find the beauty in that piece. I need to be honest about my intentions. Sometimes I start out thinking the shape will be one way because it is what I have learned. But as I peel away layers, I may change the way I think of the piece. I need to be open to change and accepting of what is right in front of me.

Honesty is an interesting thing. You can be a nice person, do nice things but someone can honestly say they do not like you because of the colour of your skin. It is their own belief of a person, that THEY have learned over time. Do we know what hate is when we are born?

All of us are beautiful people and unique. The different pieces of wood in my photo show various colours of light wood. There is one piece of ebony that is hidden by many of the others. They are not aware of what they are doing. Honesty is me being true to myself. Not letting the others stop me from shining bright. We must remember that we are all beautiful people, and we need to be brave and honestly see each other that way.
