A Visual Reconciliation:
Cross-cultural Artistic Reflections on the Seven Sacred Teachings
September 11 - December 8, 2023

Welcome to this online gallery presentation!

It is a pleasure to be presenting “A Visual Reconciliation: Cross-cultural Artistic Reflections on the Seven Sacred Teachings,” a digital adaptation of an art exhibition at Martin Luther University College (Luther), showing from September 11 - December 8, 2023. The project was conceived by Indigenous artist Dazaunggee (Paul Shilling) who wanted to reflect visually on the Seven Sacred Teachings. His invitation to three other non-Indigenous artists, Julie Tián, Xavier Fernandes and Ted Fullerton, to respond to the teachings from their own contexts, led to this collection.

The site allows you to navigate along several possible lines: you can compare the work of each artist on a sacred teaching and also compare the work with the rest of their own body of work in this series. Each piece of art comes with an accompanying text written by the artist which helps to locate its inspiration, motivation and context. The stories can be explored and then linked back to other works by the artists.

Join us at two upcoming events in relation to this exhibition!

Zoom Conversation with the artists!
Join us on Tuesday November 7th at 7:00 pm for a special conversation on Zoom with the exhibition’s artists Dazaunggee, Julie Tián, Xavier Fernandes and Ted Fullerton. The artists, who were invited by Rama Nation's Dazaunggee to respond to the teachings, will chat with Sherry Coman about the Indigenous-settler collaboration that led to the exhibition. Read more about the artists here, and register for this event by going here!

Printmaking Workshop with Lana Moses!
Join us on Sunday, November 19, 2-4 pm at Keffer Chapel of Martin Luther University College for Printmaking with Lana Moses. Participants have the opportunity to create a unique piece of art that reflects their personal interpretation of one of the teachings. Even those who have never block printed before can join, as the workshop will teach them the necessary skills and techniques. All supplies and inspiration are provided! Register for this event by going here. Only a few spaces left!

Home Engagement Resource,
now available!

Folks of all ages are invited to prayerfully engage with the online exhibition at home over the course of seven weeks through a home ritual. The Home Engagement Resource will include weekly reflections and art activities, as well as daily prompts for contemplation, prayer, and song to help reimagine Christian practices through the lens of the Seven Sacred Teachings. You can do them in any order. Find out more about it, on the Home Engagement welcome page by clicking on the button! For a downloadable version of the entire resource, please go here.

All of this work is an expression of commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and especially Calls 60 and 83, which call us to respect Indigenous spiritualities, and to use the arts to foster partnerships among Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists.

It is our joy to be able to help share the riches of these visionary and provocative works with a wider community. Enjoy the art here, and come into Martin Luther University College between 8:30 and 4:00 p.m., weekdays (see map) to see it on the walls of the gallery. However you engage with these beautiful pieces, let us know what you thought. Write to the digital gallery curator at scoman@luther.wlu.ca.

May your engagement with these works help to deepen a sense of curiosity about the artists. May it also help us all to continue a commitment to the ongoing work of reconciliation.
